A great service has been done to all of us with this Tribute to Martin Small. From time to time, we need to be reminded that in learning about the principle and significance of the lives of others we gain insight and purpose in our own lives. We often instinctively toast ‘L'Chaim’ to life. I would hope that the next time, we pause and give a thought to Martin Small, celebrating his life of meaning built on the ruins of great tragedy.

Dear "Uncle" Martin, you are my mother's favorite cousin, my great aunt Frieda's favorite nephew and my devoted relative and friend since my childhood. I am privileged to have seen the evolution of your art and poetry, your public speaking and writing during the last 25 years, and take great pleasure now in using this opportunity to express my appreciation and love. The impact you've had on family, friends and recently on the wider world around you is profound and I am so proud to be one of those few who can say I've known you since... It is wonderful that your book has finally come out as well and that its influence will continue indefinitely. I promise you to do as your book asks -- "Remember Us" and to keep you in my heart always. With much love!

It is an indescribable privilege to be Martin's rabbi at this stage of his life. Really, of course, he is my rabbi, our rabbi. He has taught and continues to teach us all at Congregation Bonai Shalom in so many ways; Martin teaches us about love, about courage and strength and reminds us constantly of the great gift of life. Getting to know this remarkable man has truly been one of the deepest blessings of my life. Thank you.
