‘REMEMBER US’ by Martin Small
Who is this little boy
Lying there by the wall and crying
Who is this little girl
Wandering alone and asking why
Who are this people
Half naked and bound
Screaming high heavens
Blood all around
Those are the Jewish people
Who lived once as free
As birds free in the skies
Then back home to the tree
But then came the Nazis
And cut the tree down
Burned the nest and killed the birds
After this – all was gone
Dead silence not a sound
Chimney full of smoke filled the sky
Beyond the walls the screams are gone
Jewish women men and children left to die
Out of the chimneys
The smoke which spelled “Shma”
The smell of flesh burning
For miles and miles around
Where was the world
Did anyone care
When Jewish blood was spilled
Buried alive – not knowing where
No one did hear us
And listen to our cry
I don’t know the answer
And I don’t know why?
Remember us
I can hear
Through the walls and chimneys
They call on us
Heylike Neshomalach
I swear
I will remember you
